Saturday, October 31, 2009 - At 6:36 AM the DFD (Tower 45 and Engine 46-1) was dispatched for an automatic fire alarm at 201 Robbins Rd. in East Caln Twp. Two minutes after dispatch the fire alarm was upgraded to a building fire after the Downingtown Police Dept. reported heavy smoke showing. The full box alarm assignment added the remainder of Station 45 and 46 (Minquas Fire Co. No. 2), along with Tanker 39 (West Bradford Fire Co.) and Engine 47-5 (Lionville Fire Co.).
Chief 46 (M. Miller) and Deputy 45 (Nelms) arrived promptly after the DPD with heavy fire showing through the roof of the Piori Mattress Warehouse side of the two business one story commercial type of building. Tower 45 and Engine 46-1 were directed to lead off with their heaviest water lines and master-streams, protecting the Goodyear Tire and Service Center. Engine 46-1 laid a 5" supply line to the entrance of the Goodyear Center and supplied Tower 45 with a 5" supply line, as well.
Engine 45 laid an additional 5" supply line to the front of Priori Mattress and Engine 46-2 laid a 5" supply line to the rear of the building. Rescue 45 established the Command Post at Brandywine Ave. and Robbins Rd. Tanker 39 established a fold-a-tank operation to supplement the hydrant system. And, Engine 47-5 assisted Engine 46-2 with water supply and fire attack in the rear.
Shortly after arrival, Chief 46 requested a second alarm assignment. This consisted of the full company from Station 39, Tower 47, Engine 6-2 and Tower 6 (West Whiteland Fire Co.), Tanker 49 (East Brandywine Fire Co.), Tanker 53 (Fame Fire Co. No. 3), Com 1 with the Chester County Fire Marshals.
Combined crews from Tower 45, Engine 45, Engine 46-1 and Engine 6-2 worked inside of the Goodyear Center to pull ceilings and stop the main body of fire at the firewall. The remainder of the companies operated in the rear of the building with master streams and also holding the fire at the firewall.
Tower 28 (Parkesburg Fire Co.), Engine 33-5 (Honey Brook Fire) and Engine 38 (Thorndale Fire Co.) relocated and stood-by at Station 45. Engine 33-5 did respond to an auto accident on Uwchlan Ave. near Pennsylvania Ave., with no service required while on stand-by.
