At 8:17 PM, the Downingtown Fire Dept. and our first alarm mutual aid partners, West Whiteland Fire Co. (full company), Lionville Fire Co. (full company), Thorndale Fire Co. (Engine 38), West Bradford Fire Co. (Tanker 39) and First West Chester Fire Co. (RIT – Engines 51-1 and 51-2) were dispatched for a commercial building fire at the Heidelburg Quarry, 400 block of Quarry Rd., East Caln Twp.
Assistant 45 (J. Trego) arrived on the scene to find heavy smoke showing from the top of the multi-story stone/gravel processing tower. And, at the other end of an approximately 200′ long conveyor, on the ground, a fully involved building, that was the mechanical building for the conveyor system.
Tower 45 (Lt. Poulin) arrived and the ladder tower was placed into service at the top of the processing tower, with the crew entering the building to look for the seat of the fire. Engine 46-1, laid an alley lay of a 5″ supply hose from Quarry Rd., then conducted fire attack to the mechanical building fire. Engine 47-5 supplied Engine 46-1 until a water supply was established, with Tanker 39 supplying Tower 45. Engines 46-2, 6-1, 38 and 49-2 laid over 2000′ of 5″ hose to a fire hydrant near the Regal Cinema. Ladder 6 and Tower 47 laddered the building and assisted with the fire attack at the top of the processing tower. Engine 45 (Past Chief J. Keen) boosted the fire hydrant near the Regal Cinema.
A second and third alarm was dispatched for a tanker task force and extra man-power.
